As July arrives in the Ohio Valley, we find ourselves celebrating more than just another Fourth of July. We are approaching a truly historic milestone – the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. Across America, communities are reflecting on the courage, sacrifice, and determination that built the United States and made our freedoms possible.
For generations, rural America has played a vital role in our country’s success. Farmers, miners, oil and gas workers, steel workers, power plant employees, small business owners, and hardworking families have helped fuel the growth of our nation. Here in Marshall County, we are proud to be part of that tradition.
July is a time when American flags wave proudly, families gather for picnics and cookouts, and communities come together to celebrate the freedoms we often take for granted. It is a month to remember those who came before us and to appreciate the opportunities we enjoy today.
At the Marshall County Co-op, we are grateful to serve the people who make our communities strong. Whether you’re tending a garden, working on the farm, supporting the local oil and gas industry, or simply enjoying time with family, July reminds us of the values that connect us all: hard work, independence, and community.
July Is Harvest Time in the Garden

One of the greatest rewards of summer comes from stepping into the garden and enjoying the fruits of your labor. By July, many local gardeners are seeing their hard work pay off.
Depending on your garden, you may be harvesting:
- Green beans
- Cucumbers
- Zucchini and summer squash
- Tomatoes
- Peppers
- Sweet corn
- Lettuce and leafy greens
- Potatoes
- Onions
- Herbs such as basil, parsley, and dill
Keeping Your Garden Producing
July’s heat can be challenging for gardens, but a little maintenance can go a long way toward extending your harvest.
Here are a few important tips:
Water Deeply
Rather than watering lightly every day, provide a deep soaking several times a week. This encourages stronger root systems and helps plants withstand hot weather.
Keep Weeds Under Control
Weeds compete with your vegetables for water and nutrients. Pulling them regularly helps your crops thrive.
Harvest Often
Vegetables such as beans, cucumbers, zucchini, and peppers produce more when harvested frequently. Don’t let produce sit too long on the plant.
Mulch Around Plants
A layer of mulch helps retain moisture, reduce weeds, and keep soil temperatures more consistent during hot summer days.
Watch for Pests and Disease
Inspect plants regularly for signs of insects or disease. Early detection can help prevent larger problems later in the season.
Plant for a Fall Harvest
July is also a great time to start thinking ahead. Many gardeners begin planting late-season crops such as lettuce, spinach, radishes, turnips, and other cool-weather vegetables for fall harvest.
Celebrating the American Spirit

Whether you’re enjoying fresh vegetables from your garden, gathering with friends and family for a cookout, or watching fireworks light up the summer sky, July reminds us of what makes America special.
As we look ahead to our nation’s 250th birthday celebration, let’s take pride in our communities, support our neighbors, and continue the traditions that have sustained generations of Americans.
From all of us at Marshall County Co-op, we wish you a safe, productive, and patriotic July. May your gardens be plentiful, your gatherings be joyful, and your appreciation for this great nation continue to grow.
